South Korea has just enacted a new law to protect young K-Pop trainees from weight gain and plastic surgery. This law, passed by the Seoul City Council, will protect the physical and mental health of young idols. According to the report, 82.3% of the 4,774 entertainment companies operate in Seoul, where most training activities take place. The new law also supports psychological and career counseling for interns, to minimize pressure and risk of harm.
This new bill, titled “Ordinance on the Protection and Support of the Rights and Interests of Young Cultural Artists in Seoul”, was proposed by Councilor Kim Gyu Nam. The law aims to prevent health damage to trainees, especially in weight loss and plastic surgery. In addition, the law also supports psychological counseling, helps resolve stress during the training process and provides career guidance for trainees who quit midway.
Many famous idols such as Seolhyun (AOA) and Momo (TWICE) have shared about the terrible pressure related to weight gain and weight loss. Seolhyun had to maintain a weight of 48kg despite being 1m67 tall, while Momo had to fast and exercise continuously. Entertainment companies are increasingly recruiting young trainees, even as young as 7 years old, raising concerns about their health and childhood experiences.
Korea’s new law not only protects young idols from the pressure and risks of plastic surgery but also contributes to raising awareness and comprehensive health care for them. This proves that Korea is paying attention not only to the entertainment industry but also to the rights and health of young people in this field.
